Aldi Special Buys are a mixed bag for the most part, but they often bring some interesting finds, and next week it’s a Cocoon branded drone with detachable camera.

This is a newer, cheaper model than the Cocoon Sky Scanner HD Quadcopter that Aldi have sold previously for $150. The spec information is light as the drone has not at this stage been added to either the Aldi Special Buys or Cocoon website – though it likely will be this week.

The scant information we have comes from the current Aldi catalogue which shows the drone with a controller with one-touch stunt feature, that also includes room to mount your smartphone – Android and iOS devices are supported – at the top of for a remote view of the camera, and the drone has guards and extra propellers included:

Some information on things like range, battery life and memory capacity and resolution of the camera etc. would be helpful but at $79.99 it’s not a bad way to try out what you think of drones before investing a lot more.

Of course the big question you should be asking is can you fly the drone anywhere in your area. The Australian Civil Aviation Safety Authority (CASA) has released the Can I fly there? app for Android, iOS and there’s a decent web app as well to help you answer that question – so it’s definitely worth checking that out before investing any money in a drone.

The Cocoon FPV Drone Camera from Aldi goes on-sale in stores from September 15th, so head in store to grab yourself one.
