The recent re-design of Gmail began rolling out to users earlier this year, and Google is continuing to add new features to the site including the new offline mode which brings with it a native offline mode.

The feature includes the ability to use certain Gmail features including search, archive, & compose when there is no data/internet connection as long as you’re running Chrome 61 or later.

To turn on this ability/feature, simply head over to settings, and click on new Offline tab, then check the box next to ‘Enable offline mail’. Once this has been done, you can then choose to store emails for 7, 30, or 90 days, whether or not you want to download attachments, and choose between one of two security modes.

The two modes you can select from include:

  • Keep offline data on my computer – Data stored on your device will not be deleted when signing out of your Google account or when changing your password. To delete account data from your device disable offline mail and save changes.
  • Remove offline data from my computer – Data will need to be re-synced to your computer when logging back into Gmail. It may take a few hours to re-sync the mailbox.

With offline mail turned on, you’ll still be able to compose new emails, search for existing ones, along with ability to archive/delete others to slowly achieve inbox zero.

The new feature is rolling out to all users now so it might be worth keep an eye out to see if you have the native offline mode available.
