Amazon’s Kindle book store is one of the best, but if reading books on your phone or tablet isn’t for you then their range of Kindle hardware is phenomenal and now there’s a new Paperwhite model to pre-order from just $199.

The new model is the first redesign for the Paperwhite since its introduction, the new model is both thinner and lighter and all importantly it’s ruggedised for waterproofing with an IPX8 rating for reading in the bath or by the pool. The new Paperwhite has a flush face design and a soft, grippable material on the rear which allows it to sit comfortably in the hand, and it weights in at just 182g letting you read in comfort for longer.

The advantage of the Paperwhite models is the incredible display, which makes it appear like a real book and the new Paperwhite includes a six-inch, high resolution 300 ppi display with five LEDs and an adjustable front light allowing for a uniform, glare-free display — even direct sunlight.

As well as the new design, Amazon has also included twice storage with the new Paperwhite – the base model has 8GB, while there’s also an option for 32GB, letting you carry around twice the books, comics and more.

Kevin Keith, Vice President, Amazon Device said of the new Paperwhite

Customers love the Kindle Paperwhite, and we’re excited to bring premium features—like a thinner and lighter flush-front design, additional storage and IPX8 waterproofing —to our most popular Kindle. With the all-new Kindle Paperwhite, it’s never been easier to get lost in a story no matter where you go.

The new hardware will include a new software experience with the updated home experience making it easier to find your next book. You can personalise your reading experience on the Kindle with multiple reading and orientation settings which you can switch to quickly from the settings menu. For Kindle Paperwhite Gen 6 (released in 2013) and newer devices, you’ll get the new experience in the coming weeks.

The Kindle Paperwhite can be pre-ordered today from Amazon for $199 for the 8GB model, $249 for the 32GB model, or you can get 4G Whispersync with 32GB of storage for $369. If the hardware isn’t for you, you can always just jump into the Kindle app.

Jeepers, who would ever need 32GB on a Kindle??

(oh wait I used to sideload entire runs of manga on my old one… forgot about that… good times reading all of Inu-Yasha… carry on!)
