Samsung have been teasing their new notch solutions for a few weeks now but it looks like Huawei are set to arrive at the display hole first according to a teaser sent out today.

Huawei have been teasing a new phone which would be “one step further” from other phones — by this it seems they mean one step further away from the notch and further towards a cutout-less phone. Today they have sent out not a teaser but more of an invitation to an event on December 17 in China.

The teaser also specifically mentions the phone, the Nova 4 and with many of the Nova phones not just making it downunder but selling extremely well here it certainly caught our attention. The teaser shows a phone with a display much like what is expected on the Samsung Galaxy S10 next year — a small hole punched out of the top corner of the display for the selfie camera.

By the looks of the Nova 4 in this image the screen to body ratio will be one of the highest we have ever seen. The phone is expected to arrive with Huawei’s Kirin 980 processor as well as 4GB or 6GB of RAM and 128GB of onboard storage. Of course, as you can see above the phone will be announced on December 17 in China.

It remains to be seen when Samsung will release a phone of their own with this display type but this may spur them onto announcing it sooner. Samsung and Huawei are numbers one and two respectively in the smartphone industry for units sold and of course you would expect it to be Huawei’s ambition to be number one and Samsung to do all they can to hold onto that top position.

This race to the top is great for us all, spurring innovation that we all will benefit from (although our hip pockets most likely won’t). One thing is for sure, this is the next step in the full screen display evolution — thank goodness the notch craziness did not last very long at all.
