Qualcomm have been the main player in mobile chipsets for a while now but now they have some serious competition from Huawei. After a decent Snapdragon 845 this year, Huawei have countered with the Kirin 980 which has some serious kick to it. Tonight Qualcomm are set to announce their reply to Huawei with the Snapdragon 855.

Qualcomm are expected to show off the Snapdragon 855 tonight in a keynote event at their tech summit in Hawaii. The Snapdragon 855 is expected to arrive in many of the major flagships in 2019, just as the 845 did this year.

At this stage little is known about the Snapdragon 855 but it will definitely support 5G, with OnePlus already stating that they will have a phone running it next year (there is speculation that it will be a phone other than the OnePlus 7). It seems like every day we get press releases regarding 5G — it is definitely going to be the next big thing and Qualcomm are banking on being at the forefront of this new wave.

Rumours also put the new Qualcomm chipset being their first 7nm chipset. Aside from that of course there will be an improvement in heat dissipation, longer battery life and more power/speed — what else do you want?

Stay tuned for tomorrow when we will learn all about the new Qualcomm Snapdragon 855. What are you hoping for in the new Qualcomm chipset or do you not really care that much and think most improvements these days are incremental?

The number one thing I want to see is big improvements in battery life, but that never seems to come. It’s always things like “7nm chipset” which most people don’t care two hoots about.
