Earlier this morning, we saw the announcement of the Samsung Unpacked event in February. At this event, we expect to see the Samsung S10 revealed.
A number of related Samsung stories have hit the news since, talking about a 5G Samsung phone, S10 design and of course their foldable phone. Let’s take a look.
New images of Samsung’s Galaxy S10 design
After the announcement, a Reddit sleuth seems to have found an accidentally leaked image of the Samsung Galaxy S10. The image was used as part of a post on the new Samsung OneUI. It depicts a device somewhat different to the S9 and very similar to previous leaks about the Samsung S10. One key feature missing in these images is the punch hole camera. That should be visible under some of those notification bar icons.
There’s not a lot of additional details here. However, this does add validity to the previous leaks and renders. With Samsung’s next Galaxy Unpacked event now scheduled for Feb 20th in San Francisco we won’t have long to wait.
Will we see Samsung’s foldable phone in February?
Also in Samsung news today, rumours have already begun to circulate that Samsung’s foldable phone will make a guest appearance at the Unpacked event. Unlike the previous devices, the model that’s suggested to be seen in SF in February will be fully operational. This will give us our first real look at a foldable mobile future.
With other OEMs hot on Samsung’s heels the company is clearly rapidly iterating on its foldable design.
A prototype 5G smartphone from Samsung
The last bit of overnight Samsung news comes out of CES 2019. According to reports from CES, Samsung had a prototype 5G device on display in its booth. The device was under glass; it wasn’t doing anything much, and its 5G connectivity was not demonstrated.
Samsung has previously announced their progression with 5G technology with their Exynos Modem 5100 (a 3GPP Release 15 compliant 5G capable chipset in hotspots and smartphones). We’ve seen this chipset powering devices connecting to the world’s first commercial 5G mobile network service in South Korea.
We knew that Samsung has test devices in development so it’s not a huge surprise to see such a unit, even if it is under lock and key.
