At the Qualcomm Tech Summit this week Qualcomm have announced not just the new Snapdragon 865 chipset but also a few interesting bits and pieces to go along with it.
Yesterday they announced that they were working closely with the developers of PUBG Mobile to bring support for 90fps devices. Although we expect to see more and more devices capable of 90fps (because it is awesome) it is unlikely that any of them will support the new 90fps PUBG Mobile without the new Qualcomm chipset onboard — unless they allow backwards compatibility with the Snapdragon 855.
Along with the 90fps Qualcomm also announced that the game will also receive true 10-bit HDR support bringing a higher dynamic range to the game. This 10-bit support will help make all the graphics on the game much more vibrant which is something the game is unable to do at this stage.
Qualcomm are also adding support for 144Hz displays but at the moment there are no devices that support this just yet — maybe Qualcomm know of something coming that we don’t.
There is no timeframe for when this support will arrive but we would expect it to arrive next year, most likely at the same time as the first big Snapdragon 865-toting smartphone is launched.
