Overnight OnePlus held a briefing to announce their new display, a 120Hz display that they believe will be the best display you will see in 2020. For those of us who do not speak Chinese they also posted the details on their forum site.
The new “Fluid Display” gets a bump in refresh rate from last years 90Hz display up to 120Hz along with a few other nice little improvements. The display will be built by Samsung will be a 2K (QHD+) display and will include a motion-smoothing technology called MEMC, normally found in high-end TVs. MEMC is designed to improve the video playback by using “real-time algorithmic adjustments to insert additional frames to a video file, enabling something shot at 24 or 30fps to play at 60 or even 120fps.”
The brightness of the display will be 1000 nits and the colour accuracy is also meant to be improved. It has a JNCD (Just noticeable colour difference) ratio of just 0.8 — anything under one is usually only found in high-end professional displays. OnePlus is actually going to be adding 30 second to the production of each and every phone with this display in it and calibrating the colour accuracy of every single one.
There is also 10-bit colour support, resulting in 64 times as many colours as most other smartphones. As you would expect the tap response is faster and better, along with the scroll response and accuracy — the touch sampling rate is improved to an “industry high” 240Hz.

At this stage it is unclear which of their OnePlus 8 models will receive the new display considering that last year the OnePlus 7 Pro was the only model that received the 90Hz display in the first release of the year. Last year for the “T” release they extended that to the non-Pro version so it is possible that it could land in the OnePlus 8 and the OnePlus 8 Pro — we do not expect it to land in their mid-range OnePlus 8 Lite, if it does even exist.
The way OnePlus keep growing they will have to land here sooner or later. Let’s continue to hound them on all forms of social media so that it is sooner rather than later.
Interesting they’re adding the motion smoothing function from TVs when last year film directors were all coming out telling people to switch that function off as it was ruining the viewing experience of their films
this is true. it has been criticised fairly widely so we will have to see what OnePlus’ implementation does to “fix” the issues it has.
These are the same people who say watching at twice the speed ruins their film and streaming services must play out the credits.
It is great advice for those who want the true cinematic experience as the director intended but everyone is different and how many people will be wanting a cinematic experience from their mobile phone.

Motion smoothing is actually good for some things – sport/ gaming – which is likely a more relevant use case for phones than “cinematic” experience for movies.
As per recent Verge podcast, the next jump for TV displays will be variable refresh rate , allowing refresh rate and “smoothing” to be auto-tuned based on the the content you are watching – this will keep everyone happy!
