ASSA ABLOY, the parent company of brands like Lockwood and Yale, has officially joined the Connected Home Over IP working party. For those unfamiliar with the basics of the CHIP working group, they are an industry consortium developing a new open-source connectivity standard for the Internet of Things.
We keep a close eye on CHIP as it offers the opportunity to create a truly universal, flexible and interoperable connectivity standard on which the Internet of Things can be built. The promise of what CHIP could achieve makes it potentially one of the most important developments currently under development in the IoT space.
With more companies slowly joining the consortium, we are increasingly hopefully that CHIP may create a truly open interoperable communications layer for IoT just like the TCP/IP system did for the internet. While ASSA ABLOY on their own are not specifically significant they are a currently playing in the modern ‘smart device’ ecosystem. As more and more companies involved in the smart device market join the working party the promise of CHIP gets closer to a reality.
