Last year we saw various manufacturers showing off the development progress of their under-display selfie camera and we were all suitably impressed so much so that we expected it to be standard fare in 2020. Unfortunately 2020 be 2020 and those big plans went out the window, until now.

PRNewswire have today shared that ZTE have announced that they will be announcing the world’s first commercially-available smartphone with an under-display selfie camera. The ZTE Axon 20 5G will be announced on September 1 in China making it the “world’s first mass-produced 5G smartphone featuring an under-display camera”.

ZTE Axon 20 5G to be launched on Sep.1 2020

Very little is known about the ZTE Axon 20 5G but given it is the first to bring this new technology to market you can bet that ZTE will not leave the rest of the phone wanting for specs. It is rumoured to sport a 6.92-inch AMOLED display, 12GB of RAM and 256GB of storage and will be powered by a Snapdragon 765G.

The rear camera sensor will feature a quad camera setup but the under-display camera is set to be a 32MP lens. It remains to be seen firstly just how well hidden the camera is underneath the display and secondly how well it operates from behind the glass and display panel.

Early attempts at this technology showed at semi-visible in certain light angles so it will be interesting to see if they just went with first or they have cracked the code to make that camera invisible to the eye but also not be affected by light refraction etc from the glass on top of it.

At this stage it is unclear whether we will see the device here in Australia and we seriously doubt it but given it is the first generation of such a product maybe the second or third generation would be better? ZTE do have a history of bringing their smartphones to our market so it is fairly certain that we will see them bring a smartphone with an under-display camera here before too long.

Would you buy a smartphone with an under-display camera yet or would you rather wait until the technology is proven to work for a while longer?

Samsung should have added it for note 20 which would have helped in sales
