Now is the season for hardware releases and Dell are joining in the fun with a new version of their much loved and best selling XPS 13. We already saw a new XPR 13 launch in January this year but now they are updating it with the new Intel Tiger Lake with Intel Iris Xe graphics.
The XPS 13 has always been made with the best of material crafted in such a way that its not just functional but also extremely easy on the eye. This one is no exception with the four sided 16:10 13.4-inch InfinityEdge display, HDR400 certified with an optional 4K UHD+ resolution. Available in touch and non-touch versions the new display has the bottom bezel shrunk down to 4.6mm from 19.5mm. The display itself is protected with Gorilla Glass 6 and has the security and video camera inside that minuscule bezel at the top (no longer an up-the-nose camera).
The new laptop arrives with all the extras expected with the new Intel Tiger Lake chipset such as WiFi 6, a longer battery life and Intel Iris Xe graphics. With support for Windows Hello, a fast fingerprint sensor and a sensor to get the laptop going in milliseconds you can be sure you will be up and running in no time.
Dell have included four far-field microphones to control your playlists etc using Cortana from across the room. Hardware-wise two Thunderbolt 4 multi-use Type-C ports along with an extra USB-C port to charge your laptop or run another display as well. Dell will include a USB-A to USB-C adapter in every XPS 13 box.
Of course the XPS 13 has always been compact but this is even more compact than the last version — which we thought was as small as something housing a 13.4-inch display could get. The XPS 13 clamshell laptop measures just 296W x 198D x 14.8mmH and the XPS 13 2-in-1 just 296W x 207D x 14.35mmH.
Yes, Dell have once again made a 2-in-1 version of the XPS 13 with both the standard clamshell and the 2-in-1 available in two different colours with a myriad of hardware configurations.
Dell have informed us of the following XPS 13 availability:
- XPS 13 in machined aluminium in platinum silver with black carbon fibre – Available 2 October, starting at AUD$2,499 and NZD $2,999.
- XPS 13 2-in 1 in machined aluminium in platinum silver with black carbon fibre OR frost with arctic white woven glass fiber palm rest – Available 2 October, starting at AUD $2,999 and NZD $3,499.
- XPS 13 in frost with arctic white woven glass fibre palm rest (previously available in platinum silver and arctic white) – Will launch at a later date. Specifics TBC. Prices starting at AUD $2,499 and NZD $2,999.
While they are not cheap the Dell XPS 13 range are well known for being decent value for money but also superbly crafted and well put together. The InfinityEdge display is something many other manufacturers have copied over the last few years but Dell have improved it even further with this year’s model.
