Google Play Gift Cards
It looks like Google Play Gift Cards are now in the wild, with the Woolworths store, located at Town Hall in George Street, Sydney selling them to Ausdroid reader Beau.

After finding the cards on-sale inside the Woolworths App Beau was able to purchase a $20 Gift Card. The Woolworths App is showing $20, $30 and $50 denominations as available as we reported, if your store has indeed got them in stock but not on display they may actually sell them to you if you show them the listing in the app :

At this stage, Google Australia has not responded with any further information at this stage, their official quote remains :

Google Play gift cards will soon be available in Australia. We’ll have more information to share when they hit shelves.

The fact that the Retail Partner Manager who was in charge of expanding Google Play Gift Cards within Australian retail is based in California at Google headquarters could be an explanation of the lack of information.

Either way, head on over to your local Woolworths and see if they are in-stock, with Big W also carrying the cards, you may wish to try them as well. Let us know how you go.

Thanks: Beau.

I’ve just purchased purchased one from Woolworth’s myself – https://plus.google.com/109605319921439928378/posts/5HMBqKhEtdv

They are definitely out there.

I’m assuming those interested don’t have a debit/credit card? I don’t see the point of going out and purchasing a $20 card for a $2 app.

for me, avoiding O/S transaction charges from my HSBC CC.

But will they be discounted from time to time like the iTunes cards are? I would usually buy iTunes cards when they were 10 to 20% off.

I’m hoping for this too. If you pick your times, you can get iTunes cards for 25% off. I’d love it if I could do this with Google content especially if I could use it to pay for my music subscription.

As far as I can tell you can’t use Google Play Gift Cards for subscriptions or devices. Not sure if this includes Music subscriptions but the wording is ‘Google Play gift cards cannot be redeemed for Android app subscriptions, magazine subscriptions, or hardware and accessory purchases.’ 🙁

Oh that sucks! My plan was to get them for my Google music all access,my credit card charges me international transactions for nearly every play purchase.

Wish Google would let me use my amex instead.

Same, play won’t let me actually buy anything with it though.

Well this will be a kick in the guts to Apple. Combine this with a Chromecast selling anywhere and everywhere they will surely make a dent over Christmas.

Just so you all know, it is also woolworths petrol selling these, not just big w and supermarket

I’m really surprised it’s taken this long for Google Play gift cards to appear in Australia. Way behind the eight ball.

I personally think this is a major reason why Android has less application sales. Because gift cards aren’t readily available in many countries whereas iTunes cards are available everywhere.

Despite being an Android fan, I bought my 7yo daughter an iPod last Christmas for exactly this reason. There was no way I was attaching my credit card to a Google account for her. This delay has certainly cost Google sales.

Exactly. Google really really need to step up their game with the gift cards.

It is on sale on South Melbourne, Woolworth. I just check it, and it is there, on the giftcard section

This is fantastic, finally! 🙂
