If Android TV hasn’t floated your boat, but an Android Media Player is still something you’d like to try then you may want to head in to discount supermarket Aldi this Saturday and grab one of their 4K enabled Media players this weekend for just $79.99.
The Cocoon branded box comes with Kodi (formerly XBMC) and Netflix pre-installed taking care of almost all of your content needs, with Netflix able to stream 4K content if your internet connection allows. The box runs Android KitKat, specifically Android 4.4.2 but there’s no listing as to whether it comes with Google Play installed.
The box isn’t too shabby when it comes to the hardware end of the scale either advertising support for 4K video playback. To aid that the box contains a Quad-Core Processor, 1GB of RAM and 8GB of on-board Stroage with MicroSD up to 32GB (card not included). Connectivity wise you get support for Wi-Fi as well as a hardwired ethernet connection. The box also has 2x USB ports to plug in a hard drive if you want.
Accessory wise you’ll find a remote control and a HDMI cable.

Hi. I don’t actually understand how this stuff works, so am I right in thinking I can plug one into my set’s HDMI slot and the player will connect to my Wi FI a couple of rooms away, then let me choose Freeview movies and YouTube stuff? And help/advice appreciated.
i think netflix HD/4K streaming is depending on your internet speed..
Does it do HD Netlix as Netflix seems to only allow certain devices to use HD ?
For around $9 more, you can also add a PureVPN account to the mix and unblock 30 Netflix websites and access 15,000 movie and TV show titles using a single Netflix account. This is very useful for Aussies because Netflix AU only has about 1200 titles – and that’s a shame. Get PureVPN, people!
The main point of these things is to run Kodi, IMHO.
If you want Netflix, well, my main TV has 3 separate devices attached already that do Netflix. I like the Wii U interface the best, but a Chromecast works better than fighting the cheap remote you get with these things.
Yeah, I was pretty stoked to find Netflix integrated with the Wii U. I love the touchpad integration despite the fact that I loathe that in general the touchscreen can never be switched off. The battery life on the gamepad is abysmal at best.

It is a shame Aldi is still a few months off opening their first store here in SA or else I may have gotten one. Maybe when they do they might have an updated version possibly cheaper.
Looks like its the model HE315035 and will have google play according to the manual, no word on CPU but the lats one was Allwinner so if I had to guess maybe its the Allwinner H3 which supports 4k but we will find out on Saturday
1gb ram is too little. I got the minix X8H media player running KitKat. Is awesome and plays 4k with its 2gb ram. I don’t even bother with aldi anymore when it comes to electronic goods.
1Gb is plenty for this sort of device. Glad you’re happy with your choice but don’t dissuade people from making an informed choice with misleading information.
P.S. I don’t own one of these and have no intention of owning one. Kodi installed on a tablet combined with a Chromecast is fine for me.

So you’ve owned a media player based on Android with 1gb of ram and have had issues playing 4k media and you are sure this is because of the amount of RAM? It’s more likely to be because of lack of hardware decoders for certain codecs, lack of chipset processing power, e.t.c.
This certainly seems to contradict all the info I’ve been able to find – admittedly predominantly from user reviews.
Josh, please buy one and put as many different codecs of 4k you can get your hands on through the player and tell us how it well it works. A YouTube video would be excellent. If you can prove me wrong by all means please. I’ll buy one if it’s smooth and requires no buffering and it outputs video at native 4k and not a down sample to 1080p.
Not to be negative but I’m not confident of 4K streaming or playback being particularly smooth with only 1GB of RAM. Android can barely breathe with that little RAM! I hope I’m wrong.
According to user reviews at Amazon similar 1Gb devices play/stream 4K media perfectly. Uses where you may want the extra ram are multitasking and gaming, which is not the primary use case for such a device.

I bought a Nexus Player, but it’s pretty useless for playing content from local storage. I had a compatible USB-OTG to plug in a thumb-drive, but since the NP does not auto-mount USB it is not recognised by the system. You can manually browse to content using ES-Explorer, but it is neither easy nor intuitive to do so. It seems you can use an app to auto-mount USB by rooting and side-loading, but that seems like a lot of effort just to play an MP4 from an external drive. Install the android m preview, local storage works fine when you do …or just wait for the official update this week.
Just wanted to add that you were right, the M update made playing local content much easier.
So if i install a app like Plex (if available) can’t i browse videos from my laptop ?
This is how I view my entire movie catalogue.
Install Plex on your PC/NAS
Categorise the movies (if you haven’t already)
Point the Plex client on the Nexus player to your PC (it should auto find it)
Enjoy your movies.
I set it up in this way for the missus, and she loves it. With Plex, Netflix and Google Play store to choose from, she has all the movies she’ll ever watch, and its made really simple with the Nexus remote.

In short yes you can run Plex on a device like this.
The Nexus player is perfect for viewing local content. You just need to know how to set it up.
Did you read their post? They said it was possible but involved more than a basic user knowledge and was not what the device was intended for. They even had a tl;Dr and you still missed their point!

As a nexus player owner I agree with it being difficult via USB, However for playing media over a local network it works beautifully.
For the price point this device looks excellent. I also suspect people shopping at Aldi for a media player most likely dont have a 4k tv.
