When Chris took a look at the Huawei Watch GT earlier this year, his impression was (while generally positive) somewhat mixed feelings. A consistent feedback across many reviews agrees with ours, the lack of always-on display on is clearly a ploy to meet the battery claims and it annoys users.

That issue is being addressed with an update to the device, allowing users to have their screen always-on. This increases the function of the device without need to consistently poke it or shake your wrist.

If you’re rocking the GT, you will need to update your device OS through the Huawei Health app then go through the device Settings > Display > Advanced > Standby and enable always-on for this to become available. This doesn’t change the use of gestures for you notifications, but you won’t need to raise your wrist or tap the screen to check the time.

Of course, with the screen always being on will have some effect on the battery life of the device. Given users were regularly seeing over a week often up to two weeks of battery life, it would be pretty reasonable to expect several days of battery to still be viable.

If you’re a Watch GT user, we’d love to hear from you on the new battery life you’re experiencing with always on display

‘Huawei Watch GT gets a facelift’

It might be the last facelift this watch ever gets with Huawei now blacklisted by the Australian and US governments.

Dunno if there’s much from the US that impacts on the Watch GT, so I’d say it’ll continue to get updates as needed.
