Samsung 2

Without Samsung, the Android tablet landscape would be a bit barren lately. With both the popularity of tablets and the replacement cycles not quite being what manufacturers would dream of the number and variation in Android Tablets has actually reduced.

Last month an 8″ Samsung tablet with a stylus made it’s way through the fcc. Today we’ve spotted another tablet device from Samsung, this one is 9.7″, and we’re betting it’s the Samsung Galaxy Tab S3 9.7″ LTE model.

So what can we tell from the filing? From the image and filing dimensions, we know this is a 9.7″ 4:3 device. The inclusion of the two circles on the rear left of the device mimic the accessory plugs from the Tab S2 last year allowing for cases to ‘snap’ in.

Internally we’re seeing the standard FCC radio disclosures including:

  • 9.7″ display
  • Bluetooth 4.2 LE
  • 802.11 a/b/g/n/ac
  • GPS
  • LTE (only one sku so bands are less relevant)
  • a CPU clock speed of 1.6 MHz.
  • Camera
  • 237.1 x 168.8 mm
  • Headphone port

FCC filings are hit and miss on details and companies are getting better and disclosing nothing extra in their filings. We will have to wait to find out things like RAM, Storage and if this is Samsung’s first USB C tablet?

At present on the LTE SKU of a 9.7″ tablet has been approved, we could well see an 8″ version as well as WiFi-only SKUs. As always we’ll keep our eyes out and let you know what we find.

Do you use or do you want an Android Tablet? Let us know below.

I really don’t see the point of a new Tab S with the exact same format as the last one so soon… surely a slightly better processor is not enough to warrant a new model?

BTW, the FCC link does not seem to work.

FCC link broken? Can’t find it there. 🙁

Yeah… the link is broken which makes me doubt the whole thing is even real…

FCC links are time-based onetime links. Basically they only work for your session. You can do a search for yourself through the FCC, it’s still there.

I’d be interested as well, if you can give me any pointers as to where to start/what to search for.

The issue I have with Android tablets is that (with the exception of the Nexus) software updates rarely come if at all. My Tab S 10 which was Samsung’s Flagship at the time received nothing, this being made worse by the fact that it was the LTE model. It’s only just received 5.0 and at that it was an early build.

My Nexus 7 2013 is in all sorts of trouble these days. The volume down button has stopped working, volume up is hit or miss, the gyro for auto rotation has stopped working, WiFi regularly drops in and out, and overall performance is really starting to suffer. My Nexus 5 is getting a replacement when Marlin and Sailfish arrive but I’m not sure whether I’ll get a new tablet. It’s either stock Android, regularly updated from Google, or I’m not really interested. If a new Nexus tablet lands I want a device with better build quality and hardware components, not… Read more »

never without my nexus 9 !!

I still use my tab s 8.4 4g daily and love it. Personally, im looking for a solid 7 – 8 inch but 16:10 not 4:3 and with 4g. I think there is an untapped market in this size. I would probably drop back to a smaller phone (currently own a Note 5) if i could find the right tablet.

using 8.4 wifi only. became bit slow recently, time to flash new rom i guess 🙂

Are you aware of any roms that allow you to use the 8.4’s split screen facility etc?

not really, i have to google tonight 🙂

Come on Android OEMs don’t forget about the tablet market. I use mine daily… so keen to see some new devices
