It’s that time of year again, with a new version of Android official and released to Nexus devices it’s time to look at which devices Android OEMs will be updating to the new OS. Sony is off early, announcing the list of devices that will receive the update.

Sony has announced a series of devices which is consistent with more recent device releases. Earlier Z series are conspicuously absent from the list, though those devices are at the extreme end of the 18 month time-frame Google lists for support for OS updates. Moving on, Sony’s list that they will make Android 7.0, Nougat available for includes:

  • Xperia Z3+
  • Xperia Z4 Tablet
  • Xperia Z5
  • Xperia Z5 Compact
  • Xperia Z5 Premium
  • Xperia X
  • Xperia XA
  • Xperia XA Ultra
  • Xperia X Performance

Sony has added their own enhancements to the base Nougat build, advising:

We’re really excited about the new Sony features & functionality and the improvements we’ve made to the user experience – and we’ll be sharing more soon.

No time-frame for the release has been given so we’ll have to stay tuned for more updates soon.

    Unless you’;re with Telstra.
Still waiting on Telstra to allow Marshmallow on the Z3.

Still waiting for Marshmallow on Z5 as well. Perpetually delayed. Absolutely ridiculous.

Looking forward to Telstra pushing this update in 2018!

Yeah, that’s a shame. Guess it’s end of life now, but it’s been a great tablet.

It’s been great and for me it still is great. Quick and responsive.

Something to do with Vulkan drivers not being available for the MSM8974 chipset and the chipset being removed from AOSP so it’s not really Sony’s fault. Hopefully someone at xda will get it all working. I’m sure there’ll be an unofficial stock’ish release for all Z3 family devices at some stage due to the community.
