play store on chrome
Google has announced via their Chrome Releases blog that Google Play is now available on the Chrome OS stable channel. Before you all excitedly start updating your Chromebooks though, it’s only for the Acer Chromebook R11 and Asus Chromebook Flip.

The announcement of the release of Chrome OS Stable channel 53.0.2785.129 (Platform version: 8530.90.0) came yesterday, 6 weeks after Google announced that Google Play on Chrome OS for these devices had moved to the Beta Channel. Chrome generally updates features on a 6 weekly cycle, so this release was expected.

What wasn’t expected is that Google’s premiere Chrome OS device, the Chromebook Pixel 2015 has not joined its Chrome OS brethren running Google Play on the stable channel. Instead if you have a Pixel 2015, you’ll have to remain on the Beta channel – for now.

Google has announced which Chrome OS devices will be getting access to Google Play but has not yet specified when that will occur. Until that happens, if you have an Asus Chromebook Flip or Acer Chromebook R11 (Both of which are available in Australia) you can update them now.
