The 2016 Summer Olympics kicks off this morning and if you’re doing a search for Olympics in the Google App you’ll see a new prompt to add a shortcut to your homescreen so you can easily access Olympics search results.

The shortcut takes you directly to search results for the Olympics with a Floating Action Button that will give you options to go directly to results for :

  • Rio 2016
  • Olympic sport list
  • Australia
  • Full events schedule
  • Athletes

The ‘Australia’ option will obviously be a regionalised option, if you’re in the US you’ll see USA etc. the schedule will also be localised to your time zone as well.

All this ties in to the search results that Google announced the other day which will see custom cards for sports, athletes, venues and of course the medal count from the games.

Google has also partnered with broadcasters in 30 countries to offer up a TV schedule to watch all the action as it happens. They’ve further partnered with broadcasters in over 60 countries to show highlights of the games on YouTube.

Google has been all over the Olympics in Rio this year, adding internal maps of the sporting venues as well as updating maps and Street View from Rio to let you check out some culturally significant locations.

We’ll be tuning in to the Opening Ceremony at 9am this morning to see what all the fuss is about.

I don’t get an option to add a shortcut. Don’t know how you’re doing that.

Me too, but no option to add a shortcut for some reason.

Same, I don’t get the shortcut button option. No matter so much really though, as Google Now is doing a great job for my purposes as it is summarising the coming days events, with the leaderboard etc anyway.
