As we saw on Monday, Lenovo has today announced the arrival of the Moto G4 Play in Australia where it will sell for $279.

The G4 Play is a more budget conscious version of the Moto G4 Plus which launched in Australia in July. The Moto G4 Play offers a big 2,800mAh battery designed to last all day, with rapid charge that can give you 5 hours of battery life in just 15 minutes.

While not a monster in terms of grunt, the Moto G4 Play does have a quad-core processor with 2GB of RAM, 16GB of storage (with a microSD card slot). Of course the Moto G4 Play has LTE, with support for all the Australian LTE bands including Band 28 support for Optus/Telstra and Band 5 for Vodafone.

The Moto G4 Play includes a decent 8MP camera on the rear/5MP camera on the front and Lenovo is offering free Google Photo storage for up to 2 years in the original resolution for pics you take.

The phone is $120 cheaper than the Moto G4 Plus, so what do the phones look like side-by-side? Here’s the spec comparison:

The G4 is available as a piece of wood to look at at Harvey Norman, Officeworks and Good Guys. Fantastic customer service/ touch the piece of wood and fork out the money.

Still no sign of any Moto G4 in Kiwi land. I asked Motorola AU last week and they have no idea when they will go on sale here.

Your table shows the play has NFC, but I can’t find any supporting information from specifications found on the web. Can you please confirm it does has NFC as you’ve stated? Thanks.

I see you’ve now removed it from the table. Thanks.

Not too bad for the price, but I would be more inclined to get a decent second hand Galaxy S4 and load Cyanogenmod on it if I was looking for a budget device. Possibly save $100 in the process and get slightly better specs…

Or you could get the Xiaomi Redmi Note 3 Pro Special Edition (with band 28 support) which has a Snapdragon 650, 3GB of RAM, double the internal storage, dual sim slots, a larger 5.5″ display and a 4,050mAh battery for exactly the same price. Stick CyanogenMod on it and you have a great phone.

Sweet!

Although funnily enough I contacted Motorola directly last week and they didn’t even have a rough idea of when it was being released…

Why on earth would they include NFC on the cheaper variant, but omit it from the bigger, more expensive sibling? That seems very odd.

NFC yes and price <$300 i'm sold 🙂
