The fifth and final Android 7.0 Nougat Developer Preview has begun rolling out to eligible devices today. As announced at Google IO this year, the Android Team was planning on five versions of this year’s early access developer preview. Taking this opportunity to look back over the Android N preview cycle, we think that it has been an unprecedented success. Sure there were some issues, some features added and removed but on the whole, this developer preview has felt more stable than the final release of Lollipop.
So what is in the final preview release?
- System images for Nexus and other preview devices
- An emulator that you can use for doing the final testing of your apps to make sure they’re ready
- The final N APIs (API level 24) and latest system behaviours and UI
- The latest bug fixes and optimisations across the system and in pre-installed apps
Unlike the first few releases this preview is all about the developers with no apparent user-facing changes, and to be honest that’s what we’re expecting. It would hardly be logical to launch a new suite of untested features in the last test build of an OS.
If you haven’t given Nougat a go yet you can either enrol in the beta or Flash your device manually. The Nougat Developer Preview is available for Nexus 6, Nexus 5X, Nexus 6P, Nexus 9, and Pixel C devices, as well as General Mobile 4G Android One devices.

no OTA update as yet on my enrolled nexus 6P
More interesting thing to me is when it will actually be released. For a final release candidate level this is very early. You could almost push out the release at the end of July, end of Aug for certain. Therefore the September date for a bunch of new hardware, all running N, looks very likely – early September to mess with Apple.
If so then the FCC is going to have a busy August.
Agreed. The N Dev Preview has been great.

PSA – This will stop Pokémon Go from functioning!
I am enrolled and have no problem with Pokemon Go. I used the OTA method.
