Google has this morning released their October Security update on the eve of the expected launch of Android 7.1 with their new Pixel phones. The October security update includes patches for issues, and Google has also released OTA updates and Factory images for supported Nexus devices.

The security bulletin advises that as we’ve seen for the last couple of months there will be multiple patch levels, this month dated the 1st of October and the 5th of October. Supported Nexus devices will receive the 5th of October update, while OEMs can choose to only patch the 1st of October update.

  • 2016-10-01: Partial security patch level string. This security patch level string indicates that all issues associated with 2016-10-01 (and all previous security patch level strings) are addressed.
  • 2016-10-05: Complete security patch level string. This security patch level string indicates that all issues associated with 2016-10-01 and 2016-10-05 (and all previous security patch level strings) are addressed.

Across both patch levels are 5 critical, 29 high, 13 moderate and a single Low priority issues with each issue assigned an individual Common Vulnerability and Exposures ID (CVE) as listed in the October security bulletin.

If you want to know who to thank for the updates this month, Google has added an Acknowledgement section to their Bulletin, so you know who found which CVE.

As usual, the latest OTA updates and Factory Images have been added to the Nexus Files page for interested parties to download and flash, but if you just prefer to wait Google will be pushing out OTA updates containing the patch in the next few days. One note about the update is that Nexus 6 owners still don’t get Nougat :(.
