Google has finally released an update to the Google Fit app, which adds a lot more functionality for those people who keep fit by doing more than just walking, cycling or running.
The update to Google Fit, which is available in Google Play right now, has a number of updates including a new experimental mode which detects steps when your watch is disconnected from the phone. There’s also the usual improvements and bug fixes, but it’s the new activities that interest at least those of us who lift, or exercise in other ways.
Since launch, one of our biggest criticisms has been the lack of activities, but that’s now at an end, with Google adding over 100 new activites. The original activites: Walking, Running and Biking are still present – and are the only activites lucky enough to have specially coloured tags in activites – but the new activites include :
Aerobics Australian football Backcountry skiing Badminton Baseball Basketball Beach volleyball Biathlon Boxing Calisthenics Circuit training Cricket Cross-country skiing Cross skating Curling Dancing Diving Downhill skiing Elliptical Ergometer Fencing Fitness walking Football Frisbee Gardening Golf Gymnastics Handball Handcycling |
Hiking Hockey Horseback riding Housework Ice skating Indoor skating Indoor volleyball Inline skating Jogging Jumping rope Kayaking Kettlebell Kickboxing Kite skiing Kitesurfing Martial arts Meditating Mixed martial arts Mountain biking Nordic walking Open water swimming Other P90x Paddle boarding Paragliding Pilates Polo Skateboarding Skating |
Skiing Sledding Snowboarding Snowmobiling Snowshoeing Soccer Spinning Squash Stair climbing Stair climbing machine Stationary biking Strength training Surfing Swimming Table tennis Team sport Tennis Treadmill Treadmill running Treadmill walking Utility biking Volleyball Wakeboarding Water polo Weight lifting Wheelchair Windsurfing Yoga Zumba |

The Play Store changelog for the update to Google Fit version 1.51.07-000 includes :
• Android Wear
• New, experimental step detection for walking when the watch is disconnected from the phone
• Bug fixes and performance improvements
We do hope that the fact that Google included ‘Australian football’ in the activites list that they are aware of the sport and are possibly going to include results in Google Now eventually ;). If you’re digging Google Fit, then you’ll probably be pretty pleased with this update, but we can’t wait to see what else is going to be included. Me? I can’t wait till my Withings scale gains support for Google Fit.
Head on over to Google Play to get the update now.
are there any fitness bands (non smart-watches) that can integrate with google fit yet?
Nope. Not yet.
thanks! did try searching & failing, explains why now :p
