There have been a few rumours floating around adding to the uncertainty that HTC would update their Desire line of phones to Android 2.3, now Android Community have stated a HTC Executive has said the update (Gingerbread) is indeed coming to the HTC Desire, HTC Desire HD, HTC Desire Z & HTC Incredible S.
“We are excited to announce that the Desire HD, Desire Z, Desire and Incredible S will received the Gingerbread update in Q2, ”
This will bring those phones up to the same version of Android that the new HTC Desire S is running. The update is expected to roll out during Q2 of this year in the UK, but with Telstra holding the reins on the Desire and Vodafone with the Desire HD in Australia, don’t expect it anytime soon.

Seems they’ve already changed their minds and gingerbread IS going to be brought to the Desire (again). But if HTC are unsure whether there’s enough memory to do it, by the time Telstra puts its bloatware on, there’s Buckley’s.

Looks like rooting is not an option any more.
Something tells me I’ll have a ported Honeycomb ROM on my Desire waaaaaay before this even gets a glimpse of daylight! 🙂
Like you I am very happy with my HD (especially since I rooted it and put Cyanogenmod 7 on it) but the vodafone service is terrible.
Frequent dropped/garbled calls or non existent net access is not what I am paying $60 a month for. Wish I’d bought the Telstra compatible version outright!
Just rooted HTC Desire Telstra to Gingerbread Oxygen RC7. It loses Sense UI and the assorted HTC and Telstra apps that used to take up a lot of space. Only thing I’m missing is the pretty weather widget of HTC sense. Probably will migrate to the HTC OTA release of their ROM version that incorporates the Sense UI without carrier apps in Q2, although I’ll wait for its review as I’m happy with Oxygen.
You could always put on a custom Sense UI ROM.
You will lose your root if you install OTA…
dunno if its worth it, i mean, theres not a lot feature wise in it anyway, is there? Bescideds, i really doubt I’ll still have my DHD by the time it comes out, good phone, but crippled being on vodafail!

Woohoo!!! The benefit of buying the Desire Z outright is paying off! Can’t wait for the upate! No offence to the folks who got their HTC phones from a carrier 😉

Hmm. Given that Telstra’s got exclusivity on the Desire S (w. Gingerbread 2.4 on it), I wonder if they’ll drag their feet on Desire original upgrades to try to push more people to that. I hope not. Anyway, if my desire original isn’t updated OTA by telstra within 21 days of the HTC release, I’m rooting.
