You know what sucks? Owning a high-end Android device that’s running a version of the OS that is 2 jumps behind the latest version. To make Aussie Galaxy S owners even angrier, it’s the Carriers who are holding up progress — surprise, surprise. So this news isn’t going to go down well to owners of the Samsung Galaxy S who are running 2.1. A leaked build of Android 2.3.2 (Gingerbread) has hit the web and is ready to be flashed to your device if you’ve already rooted it you know your way around ODIN. The leaked build is a little buggy with no Android Market access and no Swype, but at this rate, developers will have these problems sorted in no time have already got these two working perfectly. Hit the source link if you’re willing to take a bit of a risk today.
If you’re not game to try out ODIN with your Galaxy S, you will receive Android 2.3.2 officially, it’s just unsure when. Just be thankful your device hasn’t been left behind.

Thank you for contacting Samsung Customer Care.
Any software update or phone released in Australia has to be tested by the Network operator, this is to abide with Australian telecommunication laws. Software updates are generally release to correct software issues, if a device does not have symptomatic problems updates are not required.
There is currently no information on further updates for the Galaxy S.
DAMN!
How the hell do those regs apply to non-telco outright purchased Android devices?
Buzz, a slight mistake in the article, Odin/Windows isn’t a requirement. Instead you can use my free open-source cross-platform software, Heimdall, which runs on Linux, OS X and Windows.

Thanks, this is exactly what I need. I’d feel more comfortable using this than virtualbox. Now I just need to work out what I need to backup, and the best ROM to put on the phone.
Any reason it requires such a late version of qt4? Ubuntu 10.04 only has 4.6.2, so I get error: dependency is not satisfiable: libqtcore4 (>= 4:4.7.0~beta1)

Never mind, I have 10.10 on my laptop which meets the dependencies for libqtcore4 and libusb
Thanks for a great piece of software Benjamin, I have been using it for a while now. Would definitely encourage anyone thinking of flashing their Galaxy S to use Heimdall (and donate to the developer!)
Post needs to be updated: Android Market now works on 2.3 rom, I think they’re working on getting swype going over at XDA devs. And you don’t need to root the phone, you flash it through Odin.
@opti – could you please give pointers on how to do that? I’m sick of being stuck at 2.2 with their file system, lag fixes don’t fix everything.
Thanks.
A big ‘Me Too’ on this. I’ve read a few guides but I don’t always trust the sources and they all seem to assume some level of experience. I’d also like to know the back-out options, and how to test (and exit without making changes) 3 button recovery mode. Apparently not all .au SGS have this.
I did this a while ago when Kies could be fooled in to detecting the phone as a European model. But AFAIK that patch stopped working few weeks back (Samsung released Kies 2 and blocked the old version from gaining access to 2.2.1), so the only other way is through Odin.
Yay… can’t wait till I get my hands on XDA custom ROMS with this version…

Minor corrections: You don’t need root access to flash this build. Market and Swype work too(there are fixes for them).
I gave up on official firmware long time back, and will never wait for them again, a waste of time. Even the official 2.2 froyo update that’s being rolled out now is not the best, its still laggy as 2.1. Best ATM is 2.2.1 (no lags) but don’t know if that will ever come out.
I believe the collaboration with Google made HTC better and now you can see even Samsung is benefiting from it. I’m sure Galaxy S will have gingerbread before any other phone (besides Nexus S and Nexus One).
Buzz, I don’t think you need to root your device to have 2.2 or 2.3.2. Using ODIN, you can flash any firmware you want. No root required.
Well call me a sausage and stick me on the barby.
Good shtuff.

Let’s hope it does more than the update from 2.1 – 2.2 in terms of speeding it up. If not it might be time to find a good guide on how to upgrade to vanilla. Removing all the optus and samsung crap would be a bonus.
I’d love a vanilla myself as well. I am sure its out there somewhere. Not just sans Samsung and Optus, but sans anything that could be considered optional. There is so much of even the Google apps on there I have never and will never use. Just a pure skeletal Android that has the “phone” in the phone functional, but anything “app” related absent, so I can choose those for myself. Doubt that will ever happen tho, so I’ll settle for a Vanilla.
YAY!!!!!!!!!! Hope the official version comes soon
