Google has announced through the Google Australia blog that we now have access to movie rentals. They have an Android App available to install through the Google Play Store and also a Youtube page as well. New release movies start at $5.99 for standard definition they also offer high definition versions for $6.99 with library titles in standard definition for $3.99 and $4.99 for high definition.
The movies on offer come from a pretty nice selection of distributors including The Walt Disney Company, Sony Pictures Home Entertainment, NBCUniversal, Village Roadshow Pictures and Lionsgate, as well as from local distributors such as Roadshow Films, Icon Film Distribution, Madman Entertainment, Hopscotch and Transmission Films. Google also intends to add more content over the course of the year so keep an eye out.
For most movies you rent, you will have 30 days to begin watching it and once you start watching the movie, you’ll have 48 hours to finish it. Can I just say this is something I’ve been really keen to get access to, ideally I’d love to see Google giving us access to a subscription based service but at this stage I’ll take what I can get. Check out the Google Play Movies page for info on the movies available. Now, we just need access to Google Music.

I have a rooted Galaxy nexus running ics 4.0.3 and codename android 1.5.5-gn-gsm kernal 3.0.23 Is there anyway to access google play movies? I have the app and can play local content but cant download movies

At those prices…. tell them to watch it themselves. DVD rentals offer cheaper prices! and here they dont have to worry about a shopfront, dvd media and still its more expensive
I’ve hired a movie to try it out but I doubt I will hire again. Since I don’t have a GTV the experience will be less than optimal – not my fault! Peoples expectations on price are changing and one time rentals or purchases don’t fit any more. Google needs Play rentals to be ‘in’ the market.. but they market has / is / will be shifting to subscription based services ala Netflix or Quickflix.
Oh that’s right.. 480p is so.. < Y2K.
The reason why rooted devices cant have access to offline movies is quite simple, the movie studios will not allow it. When will people stop blaming google for drm issues when it is the content holders that are the problem. It is the same thing with Hulu and Netflix as well in the US. The Hollywood Studios see it as a risk of their content and they will always make the risk averse decisions even when they are obviously paranoid and bordering on irrational!
Search Play Store for Hide Root and install a root hider. It works.
Silly considering ur paying more than a DVD rental that’s less enjoyable on a phone… I mean if ur forking out for a mobile download surely the risk of using root to offload it is minimal. I thought the point and beauty of android was to be open but because I’m on cyanogen because I prefer it I can’t?
I can go to a DVD store and rent 5 movies for $10…a couple I may not even watch…but just becoz I can rip them on my computer doesn’t mean I’m going to.
I have Nexus S with Android 4.0.4, Google Play Store says Play Movies is already installed but I cant find it on my device. Works on my Wifi Xoom though.

Good to see that this is finally available, does seem a little expensive to me, but maybe I’m a little out of touch with rental prices!
Movies seem to be working fine for me on my rooted Galaxy Tab 10.1 with AOKP ICS
Looks like I’ll never get access to movies (rooted).
download Voodoo OTA RootKeeper, it has a temp-unroot that you can apply then use Play movies. Root returns after a reboot. Alternativly if you are using a Samsung non-nexus phone (that needs odin/kies to flash) then you could just use SuperSU to perm unroot your phone, watch the movie then reflash root over the top again.
I have a Galaxy Nexus so the temp-unroot works well for me and its quick and easy.
The Google gods have blessed us!
Now, we just need * legitimate* access to Google Music. 😉
It has copped an absolute beating in the ratings from rooted users. Shows just how many people do root there phones.

Forced? No, you could rent the DVD from the video store. Within your constraints yes, I suppose so. However, does Matt’s suggestion (second comment) work?
