MicroSDreader

One of the major problems that a number of the Ausdroid team have with the recent release of phones is the lack of Micro SD Card slot. A recently launched Kickstarter project that was brought to my attention solves that for a lot of users.

The Kickstarter project is, put simply a MicroSD card reader for Android phones and tablets. The list of compatible devices is reasonably comprehensive for the early days of the project that reached their funding goal in 48 hours including the Samsung Galaxy S II, S III, Note and Note 2. The Motorola RAZR M, RAZR HD, RAZR MAXX HD. HTC One X+. A host of Nexus devices including the Samsung Galaxy Nexus, Google Nexus 7 and Nexus 10.

Ausdroid reached out to the Kickstarter team of Andy and Rich about the project and their motivation. They told us:

One motivation for us to do this project is that we feel many big companies don’t put users first, instead they put their profit ahead of users interest. They remove the storage expansion option from their products so they can charge users an inflated price for devices of higher capacity — e.g., $100 more for 64GB vs. 32GB, or sometimes $100 more for 32GB vs. 16GB while a MicroSDXC card of 64GB capacity are commonly sold at around $60. Or for other agenda. This started with Apple and has been copied by many Android device makers including HTC, and even Google. I miss the old days of Palm Treo and even the early days of Android (HTC Dream G1).

Disclaimer: this represents the view point of ours and ours only, by no means this view is shared or endorsed by any corporation that we work for.

In my opinion, this is certainly worth the $12.00 investment for the functionality it offers to those of you without MicroSD functionality.

Are you a regular Kickstarter backer? is this one you’ll consider? Let us know in the comments below.

Editor’s note: As is usually the case when we post KickStarter projects on Ausdroid, our writer’s personal opinion is just that — his personal opinion. We don’t offer any endorsement or guarantee of any products that use KickStarter to raise funds, and if you invest money and you don’t end up with a product that you expected, unfortunately that’s not something that we can help. Caveat emptor.

Think I saw this on Phandroid, looks great if you ask me.

Unfortunately it won’t work for the phone that needs it the most the n4… Because Google/lg f#cked the usbotg functionality.

I picked one up.. I don’t really need it, but for $12, who knows when it might come in handy πŸ˜›

Same here. Just put down $12 for one as well. I like how it can attach to a keyring and the size is pretty good too.
