The much anticipated Sony SmartWatch 2 is now available from Kogan for a very tempting price of $149.
The watch connects wirelessly with one touch to any NFC enabled Android smartphone or tablet running 4.0 (Ice Cream Sandwich) and later. It’s functions are managed with the Sony Smart Connect(LiveWare Manager) app available from Google Play. Smart Connect downloads any applications that you need straight to your phone or tablet. There are a huge amount of apps and LiveWare extensions available.
Some of the functions that the SmartWatch 2 can perform are:
- Call handling (answer, reject, mute, volume handling)
- Missed call notification
- SMS/MMS
- Gmail
- Music remote extension/music handling
- Calendar
- Slideshow
Some of the more interesting apps and extensions available are weather widgets, alarms, phone finder, Google Maps, calendar events and a Smart Camera extension that allows you to use the watch as a remote control for your phones camera.
Sony claims that the watch has a battery life of 3-4 days of normal use, with the watch always on. It charges via a standard micro USB cable, and has a transflective 1.6″ LCD with 220 x 176 pixels for improved outdoor readability. The watch has an alumium body with a silicon wristband – which can be swapped for any standard 24mm band. It measures a chunky 42mm x 9mm x 41mm and weighs 122.5 grams.
Naturally the SmartWatch 2 also functions as a traditional watch, with several different clock faces and themes. It is certified to IP57 standards with dust and shallow water protection. In practice this means outdoor activities in light rain – not swimming, showering or diving – as Sony doesn’t provide a full immersion warranty.

I have purchased a lot of differing products from Kogan over the years. And that is not my experience. They have honoured every “to-good-to-be-true” deals I have bought off them such as a D-Link router that sells for $199 everywhere but they had it on sale for $29. So I sincerely hope what you are saying is not true.
Almost forgot to tell you, I received the watch about 2 weeks ago. It’s great!

There’s nothing here that says this is a men’s only watch… And I’m pretty sure they’ll ship this to anyone that buys it.

If the smartwatches take off, I suppose they will get a bit more adventurous with styling. But yeah, right now it’s very a male, geekwatch.
It probably doesn’t help that it’s quite bulky as well. I think this is a much better design than the original but yes I suppose it still only appeals to a fairly narrow audience.
Still… I can see huge potential for this so I hope I’m not the only one waiting for it in the mail 🙂
They’d also ship Wonder Bra’s to men too, doesn’t mean they look good in them. I’m with Jeni on this one, doesn’t look like a ladies watch to me.

Wow that’s the best price, I have seen. Expansys 209+shipping, Handtec $198 including shipping and Sony store told me $350 last time I was there. Even the pebble (assuming u can find one) aint this cheap. After the kogan galaxy S4 thing a couple of weeks ago…..still finding this hard to believe

I love tech, I really do… but I don’t get Smart Watches at all! I’ve got a PC, a Laptop, a Tablet and a Smartphone; where does a watch fit into that echo system? Hoping to be proven wrong here.

Good question! I actually do see a tangible benefit with Glass. I used to run a PC repair business and would frequently refer to Youtube to remind myself how to fix things. To be able to have my hands on fixing something while watching a How-To video would be amazing.
Navigating with Google Maps through Glass would be incredible too I think. I’ll probably end up eating Humble (Keylime) Pie when watches take off, but for now, I just don’t see the appeal.

I love my smart watch – the ability to quickly glance at things, and do basic interactions without taking your phone out of your pocket / bag feels really fluid. It’s not so much time saving as the ability to stay within a task.
I still don’t get tablets. I’ve got a phone and an ultrabook. Why would I want something in between these two?

Not wanting to go off topic, my N7 is awesome for consuming media. I stream to it off my NAS and it’s fantastic. I’m going on holiday at the end of the month so I’ll load it with Movies for the flight; so much more convenient than my laptop.
You don’t stream from your NAS across the web? Not always feasible of course depending on your connection speed (or presence (sic?) of connection) but some commercially available NASs can do this
I wish I could stream across the Web, but I can’t find a way to do that. However that might be cause I’m using a $100 NAS from ALDI!!
Besides, my upload speed at home is pitiful (Bribie Island, QLD) so not much point. Would be nice to download some files off it though, even if movies are too big.
