Samsung has announced the Sochi 2014 edition of its Olympic application, called Samsung WOW (Wireless Olympic Works). Android users will be able to use the app to turn their devices into “mobile sports stations” that can be used to really get involved in the Winter Olympic experience.

Samsung WOW provides those wanting more from the Olympics with real-time access to event schedules, latest reports on results and Olympic records reliably and quickly. The app, which is the public version of an app designed especially for the Olympic establishment, builds on a wireless communications system developed for the games to ensure smarter communications and wireless operations for the Olympics by offering news and information services directly to officials and staff.

Samsung is offering fans around the world the most direct access to Sochi 2014 Olympic Winter Games and allowing them to design and personalize their experience in ways that are most relevant to their interests and passions.

Our dedicated teams are hard at work year-round to ensure that the WOW technology is ready for use throughout the Games, both for consumers looking for the ultimate Olympic Winter Games experience, and for the Olympic Family utilizing our technology to support Games-time operations.WS Lee, Senior Vice President of New Business Development, Mobile Communications Division at Samsung Electronics

Features of the public WOW app include:

  • Personalising your Olympic Winter Games plan, including games times updates, medal counts and more in real time.
  • Sharing your celebrations with social networks, including uploading text and images to share with other WOW users and with your own social networks.
  • Learning more about Winter Olympic games with an interactive, visual guide, including coverage of the rules, equipment used and other points of interest.
  • For those actually attending, a venue guide will be helpful, including information and navigation guides.

Samsung really is getting behind the games, dishing out over 18,000 mobile devices to officials, staff, organising committees and more to ensure that everyone’s up to date. First used in the Athens games of 2004, the WOW service has become a must-have companion for those at the Games.

Will you be watching the WInter Games, and will Samsung’s WOW app be your second-screen app of choice?

I guess it’s obvious since Samsung is the main sponsor for the Winter Olympics and we know Samsung loves “exclusivity”. The app looks good, considering that Samsung made it. 🙂

It’s not on Google Play yet.

Search for “Sochi 2014 WOW” on Google Play — but yes, definitely Samsung only.

Okay, it appears when I search on my PC, but not from within my Nexus 5.
And yeah. Samsung only.

It’s not an Android App. It’s a Samsung App.
Meh. Never buying a Samsung phone.

Oh right, I forgot that apps that are incompatible with your device don’t show up in the mobile Play Store. I have a GS3.
