Last week we saw evidence of Android 5.1 out in the wild and as per normal many of us are checking our devices constantly waiting for it to arrive. A full point release is unusual at this time of the year, with Google preferring the smaller increments such as 4.4.2 and 4.4.3 etc. The fact that they have designated this one a full point release suggests that the update will entail some big changes. We have yet to see a bug fix release get a full point release. So what are we expecting with 5.1?
Back in mid December I saved a post I saw on XDA to my Pocket account and randomly came across it today. Back then AndroidPIT heard from a tipster that Android 5.1 would be arriving in early February which was then confirmed by an independent source who was “privy to important information regarding Android updates”. The information they received about the update included the following:
- Silent mode added after missing on Android 5.0
- General improvements in system stability
- Improved RAM management
- Fixes for sudden app closures
- Improved battery management
- Excessive consumption of network devices when used Wi-Fi fixed
- Issues with wireless connections fixed
- Problems with Okay Google function solved
- Notifications problems solved
- Some sound problems experience by certain devices fixed
- Other improvements and changes
- Changes in the Material Design colour palette (after users complaints, possibly for a higher version though)
With our smallish sample of our readers here at Ausdroid, their/your sounding off in our comments sections time and time again it seems that Google do have a lot to fix on their big 5.0 Lollipop update. 5.0 was a big update and for me really was Android turning the corner with their UI, especially with Material Design.
What are your thoughts on Lollipop? Do you hate it as much as some or are you like me, happy with the update and can’t wait for it to mature?
when are we likely to see the new update. My note 4 yesterday received 4.4.4 update yesterday. (Telstra) My Galaxy S5 still nothing. I guess we’ll have to wait and see.
Very happy with lollipop on my nexus 6.
I never realized how lucky I was. Lollipop on my Nexus 5 is great. The phone is fast, error free and has a sophistication that I have always expected it should have. Roll on lollipop enhancements.
I just want to know what is going on with the silent/mute/none modes, needs to be more streamline
If they don’t fix the flashlight bug I’m going to be very disappointed
I’m really loving lollipop, I’m using cm12 nightlies on both my note 3 and OPO as well as stock on my Nexus 7 2013, for me it has been a great experience, not suffering from any lag at all. The animation are beautiful and everything runs really smooth.
What devices are people using? Apart from the ‘feature regressions’ like silent mode and the other controls on the power-button menu I haven’t had any issues with Lollipop.
N5 and N7 (2012 – although that update has only been on for a few days)
Control over volumes. I either seem to have super loud notifications or miss calls because it is too quiet. I want individual volumes to work properly. Clear all apps as mentioned would be handy too.
Less lag, no forced closing of apps, less lag, no viruses, did I mention the lag?

If you managed to get a virus on your android phone, you must be pretty daft.
And you must be idiotic enough to believe Android is secure
If you only download applications with from the play store, that have plenty ofgood reviews, and there are absolutely no obvious signs that you’re going to get a virus, which 99% of people do, you will be fine. Besides, Android in itself is pretty secure.
I still haven’t met a single person who has accidentally got a virus from something in the Play Store. Or on Android in general.
No OS is perfectly secure, never will be. It is up to the user to not be stupid and put themselves at risk.
Volume management is horrible in L. Just put it back how it was in KK. Bluetooth has taken a huge backwards step in reliability. Horrible memory management issues means I have to reboot once a day.
Combination of the above has had me wanting to rollback to KK on my N5 for weeks, but I’m trying to stay strong for an update that will address some of these things …
I decided only 2 days ago I was going to roll back to 4.4.4 but upon reading this I’ll wait until this update.
My N5 has become hopeless, pretty much requires a reboot anywhere between 2 to 5 times a day and my phone usage has actually decreased and the battery life is horrid.
My N7/12 was unusable with official 5.0.x, so I’ve since put on CM12 and it’s only MARGINALLY better.
that’s too bad… i have 5.0+ on my N5 and N7 2013, both are super fantastic… lollipop on the N7 2012 is a bit slow, but it’s only used as an ereader so i dont really mind
Using stock on nexus 6, I’d really like a ‘clear all’ in the task manager. I have hundreds of open apps in there and it takes ages to swipe them all away. Cyanogen mod has this feature. What a weird oversight for google not to add that? Silent mode would be welcomed. It’s a pain to go to the movie theatre and put the notifications to “none for X amount of time’ I don’t want to think about how long the film is just to put my phone in silent mode. SILENT MODE.
Could you enlighten me on the difference between ‘None’ and ‘Silent’. To me they appear identical.
I’m assuming silent mode is muting the phone how it used to be. That is, holding the volume down instead of choosing none!
None – you don’t get any notifications
Silent – you get notifications but phone doesn’t vibrate or make noise
I checked. On none, you get the notification but you don’t get a noise or vibrate. At least for messages.
I really, really like it. The only thing holding me back from flashing CM12 as my daily driver is the incompatibility with the Xposed framework.
In general I think it a big improvement and the above list will help. I have slowdowns, random boots and lock ups and I really hate that I can no longer long press of the recent app list to get to the app’s setting page (and with Xposed) to it’s Google Play entry.
U still can, when u tap on recent, on the cards, long tap on the app logo of the card, u will be taken to app settings. Hope u r looking for same.
