After Google’s recent Material Design update for Contacts, Hangouts has received an update to Version 3.0.87531466 — but for the sake of argument, lets call it 3.0. If you’re expecting major changes with a full version number bump (the last release was 2.5), you’re going to be disappointed.

This big change is the addition of contact cards which look great, and their addition now explains why you’ve been seeing a “No contact information” toast lately when tapping on people’s names in a Hangout. The contact card holds details of the person you’re chatting to: name, phone number, email addresses, recent G+ posts and any email conversations you’ve had with them, all in a single scrollable card.

There’s also some minor tweaks to buttons and other elements in the app, the most notable being that the snooze notifications button is now at the top of the navigation drawer.

If you really want the new Hangouts and can’t wait for it to roll out to your device, you can grab it from APK Mirror.

Have you received the update yet, or are you still waiting patiently? Let us know what you think.

How do they integrate the change with gmail account of users while the user is still online? On mobile, we do get the updates (sometimes automatically or sometimes manual) but on web, there is no such thing. Moreover, is it some kind of beta testing that they do where the update is observed in some users’ account earlier? I would be very grateful if someone can tell me about this. Thanks in advance!

Until they address the constant hangs and crashes with Hangouts it will continue to be a poor user experience
