As we inch closer to IFA 2016 in Berlin more details of the Tizen-powered Samsung Gear S3 smartwatch are beginning to emerge. Last week, we heard that the next generation smartwatch would be launched in September this year, today we’re hearing rumours about some of its internals.

For those who live the quantified self-lifestyle, the Gear S3 might be shaping up to be your cup of tea with 4 new sensors coming into the Gear S3. According to the rumours, the device will include an altimeter, barometer, GPS and a speedometer. This combination of sensors will allow the Gear S3 to provide far more data points about your daily activities.

We can see this device specifically appealing to fitness enthusiasts and professional athletes to provide additional data on their workout sessions. However, all of the sensors in the world aren’t any use if you don’t have a great software platform to record, review and analyse the data, both on and off the device. Samsung has had a varied history with software so we hope that they get it right.

the “speedometer” in my phone rarely works properly, as it seems to be implemented in software, and thus, can’t run in real-time.

Sorry to ask, but is a speedometer actually a sensor? Surely it’s just a gauge that uses GPS and time to calculate speed. Apart from that, yes I’m looking forward to hearing more about this.
