At today’s Google I/O event in San Francisco, the company announced that all Pixel smartphones will be getting a new time-lapse mode in the camera software.

The new time-lapse feature will become available for the recently announced Pixel 3a and Pixel 3a XL right out of the box, with Google stating that all previous Pixel smartphones (so the original Pixel, Pixel 2 and current Pixel 3 devices) will get the feature via an upcoming software update.

Pixel owners will be able to see the new time-lapse mode by opening the camera app up and swiping to the “More” option. It’s under this tab where you will find the time-lapse mode alongside Night Sight and Slow Motion modes as well.

Once the mode has been activated, Pixel users will be able to capture long segments of footage and play it back quickly. You can see a couple of demos above.

The time-lapse feature captures a few frames per second and enables users to capture a few frames per second and also allows you to speed up the up the footage captured in increments of either 5x, 10x, 30x or 120x.

Google have said that time-lapse feature will also be supported in Google Photos as well.

It’s not clear when the new feature update will become available, but we will certainly be keeping an eye out for any updates or news.
