Nvidia’s new Shield TV remote will work with older Shield device and can now be purchased (in the US)

Everyone who has purchased or used a Nvidia Shield TV first or second generation will know how terrible the remote for it is. Many of us have purchased cheap aftermarket remotes to use instead and actually find them much easier to use than Nvidia’s remote.

Nvidia seemingly fixed their remote situation with the 2020 versions of the Shield TV and now not only can it be purchased but it will also work on all older Shield TV devices.

For just US$30 users in the States can now purchase the new Shield TV remote which to be honest looks a LOT like the third party one most recommend for the original Shield TV.

While the icons on the remote are different in places most of the buttons are there but the Nivida version includes a Netflix button, something Netflix try to demand of all hardware running their app natively — this button we also be re-purposed to some thing else should you wish to do so. The new remote also includes motion-activated back-lit buttons, a remote locator feature and a customisation menu button.

As for using it on older Shield TV devices, an update to the Nvidia Shield, v8.0.2, adds support for the new remote along with a some new apps including PLEX, Bet+ and games including ASPHALT 9, Brick Breaker and some new GeForce NOW games. The new update will also bring support for the XBOX Elite 2 controller and the ability for the Channels DVR app to store recorded content on NAS.

The update is rolling out now so check yours out to see if it’s there and enjoy the new features. For those after a new Shield TV here in Australia you will have to wait a bit longer for it to arrive on our shores.
