Asus ZenWatch 3

Following a few leaks leading up to the event Asus took to the stage at IFA in Berlin and revealed their latest Android Wear smartwatch, the Asus ZenWatch 3, and it is a gorgeous looking device. The fully round 1.39″ AMOLED display is meticulously crafted into the 316L Stainless Steel casing of the watch. There is little doubt that this is a watch first and a smart thing second.

The images speak for themselves, this is a stunning device. However good looks will only get you so far in the Android space, and the ZenWatch 3 is packing some great specs as well. The device is powered by Qualcomm’s latest Snapdragon Wear 2100 processor which has been specifically built for smartwatches. This is paired with the customary 512MB of RAM and 4GB of internal storage, at launch, this looks like a great Android Wear device.

Asus made mention of the new 3 button design, something that has been rumoured to be induced on at least on of the Google Android Wear devices. Whilst not the first device to feature 3 buttons – that honour goes to the LG Urbane 2 LTE – it is perhaps an indication of a design trend coming in Android Wear devices.

The watch will come with Asus fitness software as well as access to the full catalogue of Android Wear apps from Google and 3rd part developers. If customisation is your thing the ZenWatch 3 comes with 6 themes, 50 watch faces, watch face designer and again access to lots more via the Google Play Store.

In addition to the watch, Asus showed off 3 accessories, a magnetic charger to ensure you always get a good contact, a watch sand so you can see the time when your watch is on your nightstand and a portable battery pack. The battery pack is an intriguing idea. It holds an additional 40% charge allowing you to top off your device even when you don’t have access to power or your charger. It’s unclear if this is a really cool accessory or an admission of poor battery life, we’re hoping for the later, with a 340mAh battery it could go either way.

What new device would be complete without a few videos show off its powers

Overall the ZenWatch looks to be a great device bringing elegant design, a custom processor and all of the standard features you’d expect to find on an Android Wear device. With both the previous ZenWatch models coming to Australia we’re quietly hopeful that this one will too. With the suggested European retail price we could see it in Australia for under $350 at launch, the only issue will be the fights over who gets to review it!.

Hope for the former as opposed to later regarding the battery pack. Looks amazing though.

Silly question. Without NFC does that mean Android pay won’t work with this?

Quite intriguing design, I hope that the feeling on the wrist will be of the same level.
