So we’ve all been waiting with bated breath for Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich to come to our devices. Today is the first firm step in that process.
Google today announced today via their AndroidDev twitter account that the source code is now available for the general public. This means that manufacturers can start building the Android 4.0 updates for their devices. Most manufacturers get an early preview of the Android source code so they can start building their skins and prepping for it’s release, but by making this code publicly available it means community developers such as CyanogenMod and MIUI can start building their custom ROMs to fill the void while manufacturers go through lengthy internal and external testing cycles.
Considering the Android 3.0 (Honeycomb) source code was never released to the general public, this will be the first time we could see a nice Tablet centric custom ROM.
So if you’re a developer, get cracking. If you’re a regular user, start getting excited, because with the release of the source code, we can guarantee that manufacturers will start to confirm which devices will recieve updates and possible start giving some dates for when the sugary goodness to hit phones.

To those talking about older devices, remember that ICS will run fine on a Nexus S, so you don’t need a dual core phone or anything fancy to run it. I think the biggest issue will be internal memory size for some of the older phones. HTC Desire comes to mind. I can’t see any reason why it won’t run on my Motorola Defy…

forget getting ICS on ur Nexus S thru OTA’s. it will be quicker to venture over to XDA. remember ur nexus S(if brought thru voda) ICS update will be delayed just like all the other nexus S updates.
As the Galaxy Nexus was the LAUNCH device, I would say that the Galaxy Nexus will arrive first before the Nexus S update
Not going to help those of us on older devices. ICS for the HTC Legend, I don’t think so.

I have got CM7 on my device but I really doubt that the hardware (mainly CPU, RAM) would be up for running anything higher than Gingerbread.
Google are saying if your device can run gingerbread then it should be able to run ICS….. So wait and see.
Now if gingerbread is pushing your device to the limits, then maybe not. Looking at the HTC Legend, the specs are pretty average to poor for now current phones (lower than the nexus one, which is confirmed as not getting the update), so I wouldn’t be holding your breath for an update.
