Android distribution numbers September 2015

Another month, another set of Android distribution numbers from Google – and the news everyone is waiting for – Lollipop continues to grow, now at 21%, up 2.9% from last month.

Stubbornly Froyo still persists with 0.2% of the Android install base, a slight fall from last months 0.3%.

Android Distribution Numbers are collated from Android devices above Android 2.2 which have the Google Play Store app installed and actively connect to the network during a 7 day ‘reporting period’. The numbers are intended to guide developers as to which Android platform they should be targeting their app development, and thus feature sets too.

While Lollipop continued to grow all other versions saw negative growth. With many important security updates being included in the 4.4 and above releases it is good to see that this portion of the pie accounts for just over 60% of the install base. Especially in light of the potential Stagefright security issues that were recently brought to light.

With Android Marshmallow right around the corner it is good to see how far Lollipop has manged to come in a little under a year. For those interested in the swings see the comparison chart below.

I consider 5.0 and 5.1 completely different.
