It would seem the rumours on HTC working on a purported Android Wear smartwatch codenamed ‘halfbeak’.
According to a very well-connected Derek Ross, HTC hasn’t completely given up on getting its own Android Wear smartwatch to the market. The company, which is in the middle of a crisis with its smartphone sales declining, is reportedly working on an Android Wear smartwatch which it hopes will compete against the current and recently announced smartwatches from Huawei, Asus, Motorola and Samsung at IFA.
Phandroid, states that the purported smartwatch will indeed have a round face similar to the Moto 360 and the Huawei watch. The report also states that the HTC Android Wear smartwatch will sport a resolution of 360 x 360 and is codenamed ‘halfbeak’ within the development team.
Their wearable is codenamed halfbeak (which just so happens to be a type of fish like other Android Wear watches), will come equipped with a round display, and sports a 360 x 360 resolution.
Current Android reference devices – and Android Wear devices have been given codenames related to fish: Nakasi, Razor, Hammerhead, Mantaray for Nexus and Dory, Smelt, Minnow, Tetra and others for Android Wear, the appearance of an Android Wear device codenamed ‘halfbeak‘: family of epipelagic fish inhabiting warm waters around the world – certainly fits.
HTC is holding an event on the 29th of September in Japan where it’s rumoured we’ll see the launch of the HTC Butterfly, a handset aimed at the Japanese market. This could be an event to launch their Android Wear watch, but we’ll just have to wait and see.
I would say too little too late. I am sure I am not the only loyal HTC customer who has gone out and purchased an Android Wear watch simply because HTC wasn’t bringing one out. So unless the features are out of this world, this is only HTC customer who will stick to his recently bought Sony SmartWatch 3.
