Fitbit has announced that users of Fitbit Pay with compatible devices can now use the service to tap on and off on Sydney Transport services. The Fitbit Ionic, Fitbit Versa and Fitbit Charge 3 are compatible with the service offering, meaning users can leave the house with one less thing to remember.

With Sydney Transport’s move to contactless payment options for travel, including select Mastercard, Visa and mobile payment platforms, users no longer need to carry a dedicated Opal card for travel.

Users can simply approach a payment terminal for ferry, light rail and train network services and tap using their Fitbit device to use Fitbit Pay.  Shaun Colligan, Regional Director ANZ for Fitbit had this to say at the announcement:

“We’re thrilled that Sydneysiders can now take advantage of Fitbit Pay for their commute, providing users with a quick and easy way to tap on and off to their train, ferry or light rail directly from their Fitbit device.”

“Australians have embraced digital payment technologies with the nation truly leading the global charge to a cashless society. It’s important that we can converge these technologies seamlessly, to make life even easier and more convenient.”

With six major Australian banks supporting Fitbit Pay (including ANZ, Bendigo, CBA, Latitude Financial, NAB and Westpac), Fitbit Pay is sure to be a popular option for travel in Sydney, especially for those infrequent travellers that don’t want to worry about an Opal card.

Fitbit Pay uses underlying technology from American Express and Mastercard to power its digital payment service. This allows the company to join the likes of Google Pay and Apple Pay in smart payments for transport in NSW, and likely we’ll see others joining too.

It is just the same as using any other contactless payment method… I’ve used my Fitbit on Sydney trains since credit cards were a valid tap on method. But you dont get any benefit of opal (non peak fares and weekly discounts)…. basically it is just an easier way to pay with your credit/debit card….


The cost of a fare using the contactless payment option is the same as an equivalent standard (peak) Adult Opal ticket fare for the service you are travelling on. Adult off-peak and Child/Youth and Senior/Pensioner fares are not available using this payment method. If you are entitled to concession fares, you should travel with a Child/Youth, Concession or Gold Senior/Pensioner Opal card to avoid paying a higher fare.
