Smart home appliances are great but most households who own them have different brands and models of varying ages so the AI devices don’t work seamlessly.
It’s rare to see an entire home setup with one brand and ecosystem of smart devices so we were keen to explore LG Electronics InnoFest roadshow held this week at a Sydney home kitted out top to bottom with LG smart devices.
“LG Home is a welcome opportunity to see how our products connect in an Australian home environment and effortlessly fit around our daily routines to make life better,” said Angus Jones, LG General Manager, Marketing as he welcomed the media in.
Held for the first time in Sydney, LG showed off its vision of the smart home of the future. Of course this includes smart phones including the LG V50 ThinQ 5G which will be a Telstra exclusive.
We were shown demonstrations in all areas to show LG’s vision of what a future smart home could be. Many of the appliances on display were for the Korean or Asia Pacific market excluding Australia but it was still interesting to see what kinds of devices these countries care about. Judging by the range, air purifiers are extremely popular.
As for upcoming devices, the top 4 models of 2019 LG soundbars (SL10YG, SL9YG, SL8YG, SL7Y) will have Google Assistant. All the key specifications of these models and the other LG 2019 Sound Bars can be viewed in this PDF.
So why would you put Google Assistant in a soundbar? According to Angus Jones:
The number one place that people are using Google Assistant today is in the living room. The number two places are the kitchen, the number three is the bedroom. So it seems obvious to actually put Google Assistant into soundbars so I can ask Google, but only when the TV’s off. When the TV’s on, if I wanted to use the Google Assistant on the soundbar I just need to press the button on the remote control.
LG also demonstrated its latest OLED and SUPER UHD AI-enabled TV’s. These had pre-release software which demonstrated the ability to talk to Google Assistant and Amazon Alexa to control the TV and Hue Lights, without the need for separate smart speakers. LG 2019 model TV buyers can expect to receive a firmware update “soon” that will add Amazon Alexa support to complement Google Assistant. Later this year the same TVs will also receive a software upgrade to support Apple AirPlay 2 for easy streaming of video and audio content and Apple Home Kit for connectivity to Apple’s smart home products.
