Samsung made a big splash with VR this year, gifting a Gear VR headset to each and every pre-order for the Samsung Galaxy S7 or Galaxy S7 Edge when they launched. They obviously really want to saturate the market because they’ve started another campaign to giveaway a Gear VR to anyone who buys one of the phones between the 1st of May and June 30th.

The trick as always is that you have to buy the Galaxy S7 or Galaxy S7 Edge from a participating retailer. The list is pretty standard for Australian models of the phones, with carriers Telstra, Optus, Vodafone, Virgin Mobile and retailers JB Hifi and Harvey Norman listed as authorised dealers – sorry, your Kogan import isn’t counted.

Once you’ve purchased your phone during the period, you’ll need to redeem you free Gear VR online. You’ll need a copy of your receipt, the IMEI number from your phone and a picture of the IMEI if you’ve received the phone. Once you have all that, head to the Samsung website to enter your details.

There’s a lot of fine print in the Terms and Conditions, which you can find here, but the interesting one is you must claim the free Gear VR within 14 days of making your purchase. Also, you can only claim a maximum of three per household…really? You bought 4? Sorry.

Though there’s been a couple of iterations of the Gear VR, this model is actually compatible with a number of other Samsung handsets than just the Galaxy S7 and Galaxy S7 Edge. Earlier Samsung phones including the Galaxy Note 5, Galaxy S6 edge+, Galaxy S6 edge and Galaxy S6 are all compatible, so it’s no surprise to see a number of Gear VR headsets selling on eBay for around the $100 mark.

The Gear VR is worth $159 at retail, so it’s a pretty decent bonus to be receiving and shows Samsung’s commitment to push VR as a platform. Samsung has inarguably got a lot of reach with their Galaxy S series phones, so they will be gaining a lot of mind space with this giveaway.

If you’ve just bought a Galaxy S7 in the last 11 days from a participating retailer, head over to the Samsung website to claim your Gear VR.

Does anyone have any experience with how long it took for their VR to get to their doorstep from the day they registered their claim? It’s been a week and the status of my claim hasn’t progressed.

Kind of bs they’re not also offering to those who bought in March but not as a pre order.

Samsung is also giving to those who bought it in April. Take a look at their Facebook page. You might want to update your post 🙂

This Samsung EOFY offer is great however I wouldn’t expect the s7 price to be discounts, which I would of liked. The online retailer Mobileciti also offers this offer as well as The Good Guys.
Maybe Samsung will offer faster software updates in the future???
