Alongside their Chomecast built-in AV gear, they announced today, Sony also announced their latest and greatest in TVs, and the electronics giant has thankfully stuck with Android TV. If we cut down the models to just what we’re going to see here in Australia, Sony announced a stunning large form factor OLED TV as well as several models of LED TVs.
A1E Series 4K HDR OLED TV 65” and 55”
The A1E series is the pinnacle of Sony’s TV endeavours, feature an all new 4K HDR OLED display with wide viewing angles, stunning contrast ration and the new X1 Extreme image processing engine from Sony. The TV is almost bezel-less thanks to the marvel of OLED self-illuminating technology and the all new Acoustic Surface technology which actually emits the sound from the screen itself.
Australia will be getting the 65″ and 55″ models of the A1E series with both pricing and availability to be confirmed, however, if you have to ask the price the likelihood is you won’t like it.
X94E Series 4K HDR TV 75” & X93E Series 4K HDR TV 65” and 55”
The 94E and 93E both feature the same Slim backlight design with quad edge LED lighting for improved dimming control. The screens also use Sonys new X1 Extreme image processing engine to provide the best in 4K HDR content and upscaling.
Australia will be getting the 75″ model of the X94E and the 65″ and 55″ models of the X93E series with both pricing and availability to be confirmed.
X90E Series 4K HDR TV 75”, 65”, 55” and 49”& X85E Series 4K HDR TV 75”, 65” and 55”
The X90E and X85E maintain the 4K HDR display but reduces the processing down to the X1 image processing engine., this will offer some upscaling of non-4K content consistent with current generation top of the line TVs from Sony.
Australia will be getting the 75”, 65”, 55” and 49” models of the X9oE and the 75″, 65″ and 55″ models of the X85E series with both pricing and availability to be confirmed.
X80E Series 4K HDR TV 49” and 43”
The X80E is the new base tier of the Sony line-up which still features 4K HDR, however, contains no upscaling or imaging processing to speak of. This would be a fine TV for viewing 4K HDR content but wouldn’t be as good at upscaling non-4k content.
It’s great to see the entire Sony line up this year are 4K HDR displays and all come with Android TV built-in. It’s likely, as in previous years, that some of the lower end models will not come with the voice control remote required to get the most out of your Android TV experience, as such it may be worth springing for the next model up.
So, if you’re looking at a TV this year and want to marry a great display along with good image processing and the magic of Android TV then these are definitely worth looking at. With Google Assistant announced for Android TV today and Sony TV’s in North America being listed as getting the update, we’re enquiring if Australian models from Sony will also be getting the assistant built in. We’ll let you know what we find.

We had the Echo since it was launched and now also have the Google Home with the Assistant like what is coming to the Sony TVs. Basically the Echo you use commands where you talk to the Google Home naturally. The Echo will handle some fuzziness but fundamentally they are variations to commands instead of fundamentally understanding what you are saying. Love the Echo but the Google Home is in a totally different category.
