Google have announced a deal with ADT security that is worth US$450 million and is set to impact smart home security. In their blog post the Google team give a clear aim. That is, “to create the next generation of the helpful home—based on new security solutions that will better protect and connect people to their homes and families”.

While the partnership is US-based, the technology developments will have an impact on the devices we see in Australia. They have clearly been working on some of the technology other providers (Ring for instance) have already delivered including package detection.

Over time, Nest’s devices, powered by Google’s machine learning capabilities will enhance ADT’s security monitoring and become the cornerstone of ADT’s smart home offering. The goal is to give customers fewer false alarms, more ways to receive alarm events, and better detection of potential incidents inside and around the home. It will also provide people with more helpful notifications that make everyday life more convenient, like package detection

If you’re heavily invested in the Google platform and are looking to get some security monitoring as well, it may well be worth waiting for the dust to settle on this deal. There are undoubtedly big things coming, but whether they land in Australia is something that remains to be seen.
