Over the weekend we saw details of the next generation of Fossil smartwatches leak and today, even though the basics appeared on the Australian website yesterday, they have become official.

Fossil have announced the first two smartwatches in their Gen 5 lineup, the Carlyle and the Julianna. As expected both smartwatches feature a Qualcomm Snapdragon 3100 chipset, 1GB of RAM, 8GB of storage, speakers and microphone and an improved battery life.

There are six variations of the new smartwatches introduced today. The Carlyle is a darker timepiece available in Smoke, Black, and a black/brown. The Julianna comes in a Rose Gold, Rose Gold/Black, and Rose Gold Blush. All styles take a standard 22mm watch band and have the same sizes and specs.

All watches include a 1.28-inch AMOLED display, are 12mm thick and 44mm wide and have Wi-Fi, NFC and Bluetooth 4.2 connectivity. They are “swimproof” without giving an IP rating but we will chase that up with Fossil to get an official rating.

Fossil have introduced four of their own battery improvement methods called “Smart Battery Modes”. There is a daily mode, a “Time Only” mode which turns of basically all smart functionality and provides a week of battery life, an “extended mode” which turns of some “non-essential” features of the smartwatch, and a custom mode where the user can turn on or off the features they decide the need or don’t need.

All stlyes will eventually be available in Australia with some already available from Fossil’s online store for AUD$499. We are hoping to get hands on time with them soon so keep an eye out for our review on whether Fossil have managed to improve Wear OS by themselves.

They look good Scott but after recently buying a watch with LTE I don’t think I’d bother with a wifi only watch anymore. Any idea if Fossil will enter the LTE wearable market?
