Sony’s Xperia brand has become a bit of a confused mess in recent years, with too many devices sharing the brand’s premier naming. Reports out of Asia today suggest that the company will move to simplify its lineup, with only the Xperia X range to retain the Xperia name, and other product lines like the Xperia C and Xperia M to be wound up.
We’ve seen some grabs of internal Sony presentations indicating that it’s moving to the third chapter of its smartphone onslaught. Chapter 1 was between 2010 and 2012, focusing on an ‘Open OS for web communication’, followed by Chapter 2 from 2013 to 2015, marked by the success of its Xperia Z line of smartphones.
Xperia X is lining up for the next three years, with the X logo to be used in all promotional print and TV advertising. It doesn’t seem as if there’s any shift in focus to deliver a top quality smartphone, but the Xperia Z series has outlived its usefulness it seems, and Xperia X will take that crown going forward; this much we know from what Sony discussed at MWC 2016 earlier this year.
