It’s under 2 weeks until Google will show off what they’ve been teasing in their #MadeByGoogle campaign in San Francisco. We’re expecting to see at the very least some new Pixel phones, and while we’ve seen likely specs for the HTC built phones, a new leak says the phones won’t be very durable when it comes to waterproofing.

Unlike the high-end phones from Sony and Samsung of late which ship with an IP68 waterproof rating, able to take a good dunking for up to half an hour, the new Pixel phones will only be rated as IP53. What does this mean? Well, it’s essentially saying that you can probably use it in the rain to do something but don’t go dropping it in water.

The breakdown of an IP rating is the first number is its dustproof rating, while the second is the waterpoof rating. If you head to Wikipedia you’ll get this:

5 Dust protected Ingress of dust is not entirely prevented, but it must not enter in sufficient quantity to interfere with the satisfactory operation of the equipment.
3 Spraying water Water falling as a spray at any angle up to 60° from the vertical shall have no harmful effect, utilizing either: a) an oscillating fixture, or b) A spray nozzle with a counterbalanced shield.
Test a) is conducted for 5 minutes, then repeated with the the specimen tilted 90° for the second 5 minute test. Test b) is conducted (with shield in place) for 5 minutes minimum.

Google will be unveiling their new phones on October 5th at 3am AEDT with the event live streamed on their YouTube channel – and we may even have someone there to get some impressions and hands-on time with whatever they announce.

Knowing that I can use it in the rain without it being immediately killed is sufficient for me – I’m hardly likely to take my phone swimming; but I’m just not prepared to pay what seems to be the likely asking price when I can get something broadly comparable for substantially less. Being able to get the latest O/S upgrade a month or so ahead of everyone else is just not that big a deal to me.

Looking more likely that the Note 7 is going to be my next phone.

Yep. iPhone was in the running but I think Note 7 is the phone for me also. Very strong device. Dat screen! Can’t believe I am looking to leave Nexus after using them since Nexus One. Might get the next iPhone plus If the 10th anniversary brings something revolutionary to the table…and OLED! Just waiting for Note stock and to verify Nexus / Pixel really is as rubbish as the rumours appear to be…

Another potential nail in the coffin for me. Wonder if there’ll be wireless charging? I couldn’t do without it, now that all my devices have it

Not a deal breaker for me. However, the price that it is sold for might be.
