In their never ending fight to make the web more secure, Google has announced that they will begin marking sites that only offer a HTTP option as insecure from July this year with the launch of Chrome version 68.
Google says that 81 of the top 100 sites on the web use HTTPS by default, with over 68% of Chrome traffic on both Android and Windows now protected, and over 78% of Chrome traffic on both Chrome OS and Mac is now protected as well.
The change will display in the URL bar in the browser, simply showing ‘Insecure’
To help web developer, admins and site owners, Google has launched tools in Lighthouse to help developers determine which components are using HTTP instead of the more secure HTTPS.
Ausdroid has offered HTTPS support for a while now, so we’re not in any danger but there are some pretty well known sites not offering it yet, but this will surely be some good incentive to change.
