The OnePlus One is slowly coming together and the latest piece of the puzzle to break cover is the camera module. OnePlus has revealed overnight that the One will carry a 13MP Sony Exmor IMX214 image sensor.
In the ‘Never Settle’ campaign, there’s a lot to live up to, the camera on some of the big name phones released in the last year have been quite exceptional so the camera will have to be something. Luckily OnePlus CEO, Pete Lau is aware of this and has addressed the camera in his latest forum post. The camera module has been selected due to the f/2.0 aperture to allow for more light to be captured when shooting in low-light conditions. With low-light capture a consideration, OnePlus has also announced they will include Image Stabilisation Plus (IS+) which will use a combination of software and input from on-board sensors like the gyroscope to stabilise the image.
The OnePlus will also come with six lenses. This is best explained by OnePlus themselves :
The combination of the Sony Exmor sensor, f/2.0 aperture, IS+, six lenses add up to a camera that will allow OnePlus One owners to shoot 4K resolution videos or slow motion video allowing 120fps at 720p resolution.
And for you selfie fanatics, the OnePlus One will come with a 5MP front-facing camera.
The camera is a major component of any phone released these days, the saying goes ‘the best camera is the one you have in your hand’ but if that camera happens to be a great combination of software and hardware, then your job is a lot easier. We’ll have to wait and see what the resultant image quality from the OnePlus camera is like first hand but the thought process behind the hardware and software certainly sounds promising.
