Sony have a mobile announcement around the corner, as we reported last night, and it seems we now know what they’ll be unveiling, and no, it’s probably not Marcellus Wallace’ soul as earlier suggested.
Overnight we’ve seen details of two new handsets leak from Russia, in the form of the Xperia C5 Ultra and the Xperia M5. Following clear design cues from Sony’s earlier range, neither of these devices will set new rules in the design stakes, however the C5 Ultra does feature an edge-to-edge display that truly is something to behold. Let’s take a closer look at each.
Xperia C5 Ultra
Sony’s Xperia C5 Ultra is a beast, with a 6-inch 1080p screen, and as you can see, basically no bezels on the side; it’s a true edge-to-edge display. Size-wise, this big screen combined with thin bezels means that the full-frame of the phone is barely bigger than the iPhone 6 Plus. Other features include a front-facing flash and 13MP camera, with the same camera on the rear as well. Like the earlier Xperia C5, this is a phone that’s as much at home taking selfies as it is capturing the environment around you.
Exteriors will come in black, white, and mint green, and interiors will be handled by a MediaTek MT6752 chipset, which is an octa-core 1.7 GHz processor, paired with 2GB RAM and 16GB internal storage. MicroSD support is there for those who need more space, and a battery a shade under 3,000 mAh is equally powerful (though a bigger handset could probably accomodate a bigger battery).
The laundry-list includes NFC and dual-SIM support, and a net weight of just 187 grams. US Dollar price is expected in the range of $350 or so, and as it’s a leak at this point, no Australian availability is known yet.
Xperia M5
Compared to the Xperia C5 Ultra, the design of the M5 is much closer to the Xperia Z3 / Z3+ which we’ve already seen elsewhere, including glossy corner caps and overall look. Featuring a 5″ 1080p IPS display, the M5 has a more powerful processor — a MediaTek Helio X10 chipset which has eight 2.0 GHz cores. Alongside this are 3GB of RAM, 16GB storage expandable by MicroSD as needed. There’s a 2,600 mAh battery inside, which isn’t quite so grand as the Z3, but Sony are still quoting 2 days of battery life, and with the Xperia Stamina mode, that’s entirely achievable.
The camera configuration here is a little different, with a 21.5MP Exmor RS sensor on the rear, a slightly less-impressive f/2.2 aperture, but lightning quick autofocus at 0.2 seconds. Though it’s digital zoom (reportedly), the Xperia M5 is capable of 5x zoom with no reduction in image quality, which is something we’d definitely like to try out. The front facing camera, which is quite large, as you can see, is the same 13MP module featured in the Xperia C5 and C5 Ultra (above).
Overall, the Xperia M5 will be 7.6mm thick, and available in black, white and gold. It will continue the trend of some of Sony’s tougher contenders, with IP65/68 dust and water certification, and a cap-less USB port, meaning that water-proof rating applies without having to worry about fiddling with port covers.
Priced slightly higher than the Xperia C5 Ultra (which you’d expect, as the M5 is slightly more premium), we’re seeing a USD price of $390 or so. Australian availability is yet to be confirmed, and we’ll get on to Sony about local availability once announcements are made in coming days.
I’m a proud z3 owner, I love my device. I am hoping that the z5 will be a worthy upgrade for me to jump to pure joy is to have the ability to capture raw images and to have full Manual control on the camera that alone will be enough for me to sell the z3 and get a z5. I was hoping the update to 5.1.1 I got earlier in the week may of contained the camera 2 apk but there is not..
