OnePLus 2

The OnePlus 2 will launch on August 11 in the US, Canada, India, European Union and China with a launch in South East Asia to follow in Q4. The 64GB model will go for US$389 (AU$532) and a 16GB model for US$329 (AU$450).

OnePlus’ now-familiar invite system will be in play, though the company says it’s been revamped a little for 2015. Head over to OnePlus’ invites page to find out more.

The company hosted a VR launch event that was fairly unique, though the experience was marred by poor stream quality and a crashing app for some people – including several members of the Ausdroid team. It was a prerecorded video that started with a walk around OnePlus’ offices, talking about the great community that OnePlus has garnered with the OnePlus One, complete with inspirational music before moving on to the OnePlus 2.

Not many specs were unknown about the OnePlus 2, but a few more were revealed in the presentation. We also got confirmation that this mornings photos were indeed the real deal.

The specs?

  • Snapdragon 810
  • 4GB RAM
  • 64GB Storage
  • 5.5” 1080P
  • 3300mAh battery
  • 13MP Camera with OIS, Laser focus, 1.3um
  • Dual 4G SIMs

Note: There are still rumours that the 16GB model will come with 3GB of RAM, but we’re waiting for OnePlus to officially confirm specs.

The OnePlus 2 will come with a physical alert slider on the side of the phone, similar to the Palm Treo from days of yore, which allows you to control volume or alerts easily using the Lollipop notification system of Full, Priority or Mute all.

The OnePlus 2 will also feature a fingerprint scanner with support for up to 5 unique fingerprints. OnePlus assures us that the reader will be fast and accurate, but will of course bear further investigation.

The camera is much improved, though Carl Pei has recently tweeted that it will improve over the next 6-8 weeks, but they believe it to be a great quality camera. The camera features a 13MP sensor with 1.3 micron pixels. The camera features OIS makes to photos clearer and Laser focus to ensure fast, in-focus shots in 0.3 seconds to ensure you never miss a moment.

Accessory wise, OnePlus has brought back the Style Swap covers. They will be offering four variations of Style Swap cover as an aftermarket accessory in Bamboo, Black Apricot, Rosewood, and Kevlar. Also on the accessory list, but included in the box is a USB-C charging cable which features a reversible USB cable on the other end to make plugging it into your computer a single step process.

Still missing? The important part for us – supported 4G bands. That’s important because the OnePlus 2 isn’t heading to our shores for launch so you’ll likely need to secure an invite and go through a freight forwarder in much the same way a number of users got their hands on the OnePlus One.

The company also says it’s planning pop-up stores in 9 cities around the world – you can RSVP for six of these events (New York City, San Francisco, London, Milan, Berlin and Paris) at attending.io/oneplus.

There’ a pricing list announced for all the markets the phone will launch in if you’re going to be in one of those countries once the phone is announced.

Ahhh well bring on the moto x 2015 event. Hopefully they do better on worldwide availability this time

Joon

Are they seriously planning to release it to the general public by 2016 & the only way to get it at the moment is by invite? No, thanks!

By then another company would have released an even better phone. Their marketing team is terribly awful at their job, even Apple doesn’t do this, cash in first! lol

Tony Soprano

The invite system is put in place to cut advertising costs. The only want to sell to people that know about the phone and WILL purchase it. It isn’t about customers that are on the fence or haven’t heard about it. That’s why the system is in place.

mrjayviper

pre-order does the same thing. One+ still gets the money and customers don’t have to chase an invite…

Tony Soprano

Yes, I understand that, but a pre-order system allows anyone and everyone to pre-order as many as they want. The restriction of an invite system allows them to keep a steady flow instead of being overwhelmed with orders they can’t complete in a timely manner.

mrjayviper

yawn

sigh love to get one but damn hate this invite system they hve on cant they just sell it in australia like normal phone company does

Pumpino

No L700, no L2300, no shipping to Australia, and another invite system = no thanks.

2016 flagship killer? Are they serious? The majority of people won’t be able to get it until 2016, sure, and by then it will be competing with the Nexus 5 (2015), which is rumoured to include the Snapdragon 820. That will be the 2016 flagship killer!

Assuming (and hoping) that the above pricing converts closely when the OnePlus 2 comes to Australia, that makes these about $450 AUD for the 16GB and $530 AUD for the 64GB.

Your move, Google/Huawei/LG/whoever…

Duncan_J

OK, i was never going to get this phone but,1. no NFC, 2 no Qi, 3.

that said, the camera looks promising with OIS and laser focus (fingers crossed) and the notification switch is intriguing, I wonder if it ca be overridden by a tasker event, also 64gb is nice

mversion

Wait, so the specs are final and confirmed? No NFC and no Qi is definitely a deal breaker. I find it hard to believe they’d omit NFC in the first place!

Chris Croft

OnePlus said many times no wireless charging, I not sure why anyone is surprised by this.

NO NFC makes no sense, need to wait to confirm this in final version,

SachmoJoe

Android Central have said NFC is included and they’ve seen the chip under the back cover.

Daniel Tyson

What they found was pins to connect to an NFC Coil: “Under this plate you’ll find a dual-sim tray, contacts for the NFC chip in the backplate” There isn’t actually a chip in the backplate

kungfutigerr

In a photo I saw the two contacts on the back of the phone, and on the back cover. I surmised that it was so that the phone knew which back cover was attached, and it could change the theme/colour scheme to match.

Just a guess though.

SachmoJoe

Ah I see… But doesn’t that suggest NFC is in there, even if not in the backplate?

Marné Prinsloo

Want! But also like my Oneplus One.
