One of the big handset announcements this year is for the LG G5, with an announcement set for the day before Mobile World Congress kicks off LG is in full tease mode for the handset. Today LG has started teasing an ‘Always On’ display for the phone.
Appearing on the companies Facebook and Google+ pages, the posts includes a GIF and blurb teasing the new feature which they say will include ‘Advanced and upgraded multimedia capabilities’ that will ‘differentiate the new LG G5 from the competition’:
The concept of an always on display is definitely attractive, with information there front and centre, though companies like Motorola have had to use things like Moto Display which utilises the AMOLED display to give peeks at information as notifications appear. Of course this begs the question of whether the G5 will use an AMOLED or LCD screen, with LG tending to prefer the LCD panels the company has excelled in making for the past few years.
In terms of what else the phone will come with you can expect to see a lot more of these teases in the lead up to the launch so stay tuned.
Several windows phones already have this, they display the time always on (the 640 XL is the one I have). Battery life is still great (but I don’t know how to turn it off anyway)
I wonder if this means a switch to OLED for LG. It would make sense, as that type of function on an LCD display would kill the battery. I loved this feature on my Lumia 950 XL. I’m looking forward to having this on the G5 too. Not sure about them changing to a “generic smartphone” shape though. The G4 is a gorgeous looking device.
G flex was using poled screens, and lg had invested 8 billions into poled screens, and finally since iPhone is also switching to amoled screens then why not lg.
